MANILA - Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano believes the presidency is Vice President Jejomar Binay's way to escape charges that could be filed against him in relation to allegations of corruption that a Senate subcommittee is currently investigating.
Binay, who has declared his intention to run for president in 2016, is facing accusations of overpriced infrastructure projects and rigged biddings in Makati City when he was mayor, and of unexplained wealth.
Cayetano pointed out that if Binay becomes president, he would enjoy immunity from charges throughout his term.
"Nakikita ni Vice President Binay ang 2016 as his get-out-of-jail card. Tinitingnan niyang great escape niya ang pagiging presidente," Cayetano told reporters in a briefing on Friday.
"Kung dati ambisyon niya lang ito...ngayon nakikita niyang ito rin ang pagtakas niya sa hustisya."
Binay denies all the allegations, saying his accusers merely want to hurt his chances in the presidential race.
He has also repeatedly refused to attend the investigation of the Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee, which he said has already prejudged him.
Binay's camp said the Vice President would have set a precedent if he attended the probe. But Cayetano disputed this, saying past officials like former Vice President Noli de Castro had attended a Senate inquiry.
Cayetano said Binay's refusal to explain himself in the Senate would not set a bad precedent. Instead, "he will be bad president. In fact, he will be worse than GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo)," the senator said.
"Ang problema, Mr. Vice President Binay, kung walang tinatago, bakit ka nagtatago?" Cayetano added.
Cayetano also dared Binay, who has said the country's rich are out to destroy him, to open his bank accounts to scrutiny.
"Buo ang aming impormasyon na pag nabuksan ang bank accounts ni VP Binay...lalabas at lalabas na ang bilyonaryo sa mga presidentiables, walang iba kundi si Jojo Binay," he said.
